------
The customs fees for receiving a package in Switzerland, such as a sweater, depend on several factors:
-
Value of Goods: Customs duties and VAT (value-added tax) are calculated based on the total value of the package, including shipping costs. The value must be declared correctly.
-
VAT: For goods imported into Switzerland, an import VAT of 7.7% is charged on the total value of the item (including shipping costs).
-
Customs Duties: For textiles like sweaters, there are generally no customs duties, but there is a threshold:
- Goods worth up to CHF 65 are exempt from VAT because the tax amount is less than CHF 5 (this is known as the "small consignment exemption").
- If the value exceeds this amount, the 7.7% VAT is applied.
-
Customs Processing Fees: If a private shipping company (like the Post, DHL, FedEx, etc.) handles the package, they usually charge a customs processing fee for handling the import formalities. These fees vary depending on the courier and the country of origin. For example:
- Swiss Post charges a customs clearance fee of between CHF 11.50 and CHF 16, depending on the value of the goods.
Example Switzerland:
If your sweater costs CHF 100 including shipping:
- VAT: 7.7% of CHF 100 = CHF 7.70.
- Customs processing fees: e.g., CHF 16 (depending on the courier).
In total, customs and processing fees could amount to around CHF 23.70.
